What is a Besom? Do I Need one? What are they used for?
Let's start at the top. A Besom is a Broom. BUT.. it's not just any broom. It's a Magical broom. Just like the mundane version, they're used for sweeping and cleansing, but instead of cleaning up physical dirt, Magical Besom's are used for energetic cleaning.
Besoms are used to cleanse a space of negative energies and to protect against malevolent entities. When using a besom for this purpose, keep the bristles off of the floor as you are "sweeping". Always sweep towards the door, so as the negative energies get swept out the door. They can be hung by an entrance way to "sweep" away the negative energy that may try to enter.
Besoms also represent fertility. The handle represents the masculine energies, and the bristles represent the feminine energies. This is one reason why rural people would "ride" their besoms in the fields at the planting season, to ensure a fertile and abundant harvest. 'Jumping the Broom' Weddings using brooms/besoms may have originated from a need for marriage outside of the laws of the day. When unable to legally marry, persons would perform a commitment ceremony which would entail jumping over a broomstick. In these instances it was used as a metaphor for "sweeping away" ones old life and beginning a new life together with their partner.
